Program History

In the 1930s, Santa Clara University fostered its first ever hockey team. Although little is known about the team, its existence was short lived. More than sixty years later, Santa Clara Hockey surfaced again with new leadership and a new attitude in the the mid-1990s. With the guidance of Boston College transfer Matt Goezler and the determination of Derek Dukes, SCU Hockey was on a fast track to become a quality club hockey program in California. Yet, as fate would have it in 1996, the coach of SCU Hockey resigned and the program was left to the players. The students were determined to keep the team afloat amongst tumultuous times and kept SCU Hockey alive until its departure in 1999.

On October 30th, 2006, SCU Hockey redefined itself and once again became an officially recognized club sport. Months earlier, Steven Barbieri and Justin Perna dedicated their lives to resurrecting an old, east coast tradition in the heart of the Silicon Valley. Determined, Barbieri and Perna built a roster, ran unofficial meetings, and filled out the necessary paperwork to gain club status. Now that the team has formed, watch out for the Broncos to hit the ice.
